ON Toronto - Director of Recreation RET

Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director of the residence, the Director of Recreation is accountable to provide recreation services that enhance lives and maximize Revera Residents' wellness through high quality recreation and rehabilitation products and programs ensuring that our Residents are engaged and stimulated physically, socially, spiritually, intellectually, vocationally and emptionally in compliance with regulatory, legislative and organizational standards.
Responsibilities

  • Ensure the quality of recreation, wellness and leisure services in compliance with professional, regulatory, legislative and / or organizational standards;
  • Plan, develop and facilitate meaningful recreation / leisure programs;
  • Ensure residents are aware of recreation / leisure opportunities available to them by creating and distributing monthly recreation calendars and newsletters;
  • Schedule all Recreation staff to ensure appropriate mix of staff and hours, balancing profitability and service outcomes;
  • Ensure that the Recreation department is compliant with regulatory and / or organizational standards;
  • Build and sustain a high performance Recreation team ;
  • Participate in the development of the annual operating quality / Business Plan, including operating budget, capital budgets, marketing plan (if applicable) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) / Risk Management;;
  • Implement and monitor all approved recreation budgets and plans, and introduce corrective strategies when there is a budget / plan variance;
  • Promote Resident autonomy, independence and advocacy, including Residents’ rights and a culture of non-abuse;
  • Ensure completion of leisure interest profiles for Independent Living (IL) and move-in and ongoing assessment to plan for Assisted Living (AL);
  • Escalate resident or family complaints to the Executive Director if beyond the scope of Director Recreation;
  • Effectively promote the Resident’s Council, including attendance at Council meetings upon invitation;
  • Provide or participate in residence tours with prospective Residents, clients or families and ensure appropriate recreation, wellness and leisure information is provided;
  • Ensure appropriate supply and maintenance of all recreation equipment and supplies in compliance with Revera policies, practices and standards and in compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, while maintaining budget requirements;
  • Ensure that purchasing (operating and capital) is conducted in accordance with policy, practices and standards and with approved vendors;
  • Ensure all Resident records are current, and maintained in accordance with policies, practices and standards;
  • Uphold and promote the organization’s values and philosophy relating particularly to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Revera’s Code of Conduct ;
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Diploma or undergraduate degree in wellness or exercise, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, gerontology or a related field
  • A current membership with the applicable professional body and competency to perform skills within their scope of practice (i.e.: Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association [CTRA])
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience, preferably in a healthcare setting such as geriatrics or adult wellness programming; minimum 2 years in Management role
  • Current CPR / First Aid Certification; Class 4 / Class “F” driver’s license
  • Certification in specific wellness related interventions (i.e. Seniors Fitness, Montessori-based Dementia Programming, Seniors Aqua fitness, etc.) would be considered an asset
  • Strong leadership skills, and experience in managing staff and volunteers
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to respectfully and compassionately work with older adults and their families
  • Business management background and skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and electronic health records
  • Proficiency in a second language consistent with the resident population is considered an asset
