Fort McMurray AB - Aquatic Team Lead

Aquatic Team Lead
SCOPE:
Aquatic Team Lead reports directly to the Aquatic Supervisor. They provides hands on program delivery, oversee deck operations though a designated shift time, coordinating the provision of lifeguarding and instructional services to ensure exceptional teamwork and world class guest, member and student service at Syncrude Aquatic Centre at MacDonald Island Park Corporation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide excellent lifeguarding and instructional service (hands on program delivery).
  2. Oversee designated shift times, ensuring adherence to provincial legislation, best practices and internal policies and procedures.
  3. Ensure safe and proper employee rotation, to include breaks.
  4. Ensure world-class member, guest and student service.
  5. Respond to, or appropriately direct swim lesson and other inquires.
  6. Provide a leadership role in rescues and first aid situations when required.
  7. Assist Aquatic Supervisors and the Aquatic Centre Manager, as required.
  8. Ensure water and air sampling and the recording of sampling results accurately and on time.
  9. Ensure equipment checks.
  10. Perform and ensure wristband checks occur on an ongoing basis.
  11. Provide ongoing feedback in a timely manner.
  12. Wear designated uniform while on duty.
  13. Coach, mentor and develop teammates.
  14. Complete reports appropriately and in a timely manner.
  15. Be familiar with opening and closing procedures and perform opening and closing checks.
  16. Conduct new employee, lifeguard- and instructor-in-training and volunteer orientations.
  17. Ensure the safe use of employee protective equipment.
  18. Oversee an assigned portfolio of administrative responsibilities which may include (i) first aid, (ii) swim team liaison, (iii) aquatic fitness, (iv) leadership training, (v) equipment maintenance and retail sales, (vi) facility maintenance, (vii) assistant lifeguards, or (viii) program inventory and purchasing.
  19. Assists in the preparation and delivery of regular in-service training events for employees and volunteers.

· Knowledge of lifeguarding principles and practices.
· Knowledge of aquatic instructional programs and evaluation standards.
· Knowledge of safe work practices.
· Knowledge of applicable provincial legislation.
· Ability to work independently and as a contributing member of a team.
· Ability to promote water safety and drowning prevention through public education and special events.
· Ability and willingness to be flexible in a changing work environment
· Ability to establish and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships with all teammates.

WHMIS (to be recertified annually)
  • Oxygen Therapy Provider (to be recertified annually)

Qualifications Considered an Asset:

· YMCA Canada Swim Instructor Award
· Certified Aqua fitness Instructor (Strongly Recommended)
· Pool Operator Level 2

Experience & Educational Requirements:
A minimum of four to six years of practical work experience as a Lifeguard/Instructor and exceptional work references are desired
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as Recreation, Leisure, Fitness, Coaching, Health, Sociology, Psychology, Education, etc. and/or a combination of award certifications and experience deemed equivalent is desired.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & SAFETY:
While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing, standing at a height, sitting, sitting at a height, crouching, walking, climbing, swimming, performing work while wet and/or performing the aforementioned tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Emergency tasks and regular staff training events involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing and/or swimming and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling heavy objects including distressed persons on land or in the water, including performing work while wet and/or performing the aforementioned tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Lifeguard/Instructors must maintain the ability to demonstrate “Must See” and “Instructional Emergency Response” items from the appropriate governing body’s current publication standards to the satisfaction of the employer at all times of scheduled employment.
  • Safe lifting, bending, carrying and rescue techniques and the use of a rescue aid in the water and the coordination of rescue with a second rescuer and rescue aids in the water, when possible, are required.
  • Safe use of employee protective equipment is required.
· All employees are responsible and accountable for MacDonald Island Parks’ health and safety policy. All employees at every level should be familiar with the requirements of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation as it relates to their work processes.
